StoryTap Gives Spotlight: Girl In The Wild

As a woman-led company, StoryTap is proud to support Girl In The Wild, a BC-based non-profit company that aims to empower teen girls who are struggling with self-esteem. Each year, groups of 8 Canadian girls are invited to life-changing wilderness retreats free of charge, each one led by 4 strong female mentors. There, the problems they may be facing at home or school are forgotten, traded for educative adventures and caring conversation, creative self expression and more. The organization’s goal is for every girl to uncover her wild and set herself free from self-doubt, self-harm and judgement.

Girl In The Wild activities range from traversing boulder fields and trekking over mountain passes to dancing, meditating and cooking. Surviving and thriving together for a few days, participants bond and become vulnerable with each other, allowing for healing through real talk about body image, mental health and difficult topics. The atmosphere provides a safe and non-judgemental space for girls to be themselves, shedding the expectations of society and the pressures of their everyday life.

The trip to Canada with a group of people I only met online was probably the single most important event I’ve ever experienced,” says 17-year-old Sophie, a participant in the 2019 camp. “I cried. I laughed. I opened my heart up and was as vulnerable as the person next to me. I can still feel the love we shared as we sat on the porch late at night talking about deep topics like sexuality, identity, women’s rights and mental health. I opened up for the first time in years, maybe the first time ever.”

StoryTap is happy to help with this incredible initiative. Our technology is donated to Girl In The Wild as a way for all interested applicants to submit their stories explaining why they are the right fit for a camping adventure with Girl In The Wild. Our user-friendly video automation platform and customized storyline prompts make it easy for young women to share their current struggles and express their hopes for a meaningful experience with Girl In The Wild. StoryTap is also used post-camp as a way for participants to share their experiences and valuable lessons they’ve learned. These videos are shared (with permission) on social media as a way of highlighting the organization to future participants who would benefit from the retreat.
