What is B-roll?

Traditionally, B-roll refers to secondary video footage that complements the main story in a film or video. It’s often used to add context or enhance the visual storytelling. With StoryTap’s new UGC B-roll feature, this concept is now available for brands to incorporate into their video campaigns.

StoryTap B-roll allows you to collect extra video content from your customers that doesn’t necessarily make it into the final video on your website, such as a testimonial or a product review. However, these clips can be incredibly valuable for use in other areas, like social media campaigns, video ads, or even blog posts.

 

How Does It Work?

The B-roll feature is designed to be user-friendly, seamlessly integrated into the StoryTap platform. Here’s a quick breakdown of how it works:

  1. Set Up Prompts for Your Customers: When you create a Storyline (video campaign), you’ll guide your customers with prompts. These are simply instructions that lead them to record a response. For example, in a product review, prompts might include “Hi, my name is (name)” and “I would / wouldn’t recommend this product because …”
  2. Add a B-roll Prompt: After setting up the primary prompts, you can add a B-roll prompt like, “Show how you use [Product Name].” This prompt encourages customers to demonstrate how they interact with the product, providing valuable extra footage. Importantly, this B-roll isn’t included in the final video on your website, but it’s available for other uses.
  3. Recording Experience: Once your customers start recording, they’ll see the main prompts, followed by the B-roll prompt. It’s a seamless experience for them, as they record their main responses and then have the opportunity to showcase the product in action with the B-roll.
  4. Accessing B-roll: After the video is recorded, you can easily access the B-roll content in two ways. You can view it alongside the main clips by clicking on the video and navigating to the “Clips” tab. There’s also a new Story Cuts feature that allows you to see all recorded clips in one place. From here, you can select, download, and use the B-roll as needed.
